This position is responsible for mechanical engineering support of major capital projects (> 5 Million USD) being executed at Bayer Pharmaceutical or Consumer Health sites in North, Central or South America.  Responsibilities include:

  • Professional with high technical competency who leads project or discipline teams;
  • Influences direction of complex projects and communicates with all levels of employees;
  • Recognized as an authority in multiple areas and provides leadership and guidance to others;
  • Continuously participates in technical and non-technical training;
  • Responsible for leading the process of defining and developing the scope of work in area of responsibility (including evaluation of alternatives) in a professional, cost and time efficient manner;
  • The principal mechanical engineer performs leadership assignments in one or more of the engineering specialties;
  • Assignments involve the application of established principles to offer engineering solutions to strategic business partners, both internal and external to Bayer;
  • The successful candidate may also initiate and lead optimization/improvement opportunities in their area of responsibility;
  • Acting as project manager on assigned projects, the incumbent also plans and executes capital investment projects in the region.

The primary responsibilities of this role, Principal Engineer are to:

  • Support projects for the various businesses with the design of building HVAC systems, including airside and cooling, heating and dehumidifying system components serving cGMP facilities. Also knowledgeable in design and operations of central utilities equipment (chillers, boilers, cooling towers, pumps, compressed air systems, etc.);
  • Participate in scope definition/control for plant modifications, small projects and mid-size/large projects as appropriate. Coordinate work within discipline team, with clients and other consultants as well s in-house staff from other disciplines;  
  • Perform engineering analysis work, including load calculations and equipment sizing. Write project reports and specifications;
  • Engage contractors for pre-construction and construction support activity including review for submittals and request for information (RFI); Review and evaluate bids; Review and provide input for submittals and RFI”s;
  • Support & maintain as-built plant documentation and safeguard the documentation standards in his/her area;
  • Recommend innovative asset reliability and process improvements, in areas where little precedent exists;
  • Responsible for performing/managing the work required to qualify/validate equipment, methods, processes, and other relevant manufacturing support;
  • Ensure timely completion of assignments within priorities established by supervision and manufacturing needs. Obtain other internal/external resources as needed to meet the time deadlines.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor of Science, Engineering with the following relevant experience within applicable industry:
    • BS & 8 years
    • MS & 6 years
    • PhD & 4 years
    • Degree in Mechanical Engineering is preferred, other Engineering majors may be acceptable;
  • 2 years of work experience with HVAC;
  • Ability to make decisions and work independently to develop and implement state-of-the-art solutions;
  • Ability to communicate effectively and promptly (both written and verbal) with all levels of the organization;
  • Strong Analytical and problem solving (decision making) skills;
  • Demonstrated leadership and people skills with the ability to work well in a team setting;
  • Good organizational and presentation skills;
  • Good interpersonal skills such as communication, listening, verbal and assertiveness;
  • Results driven and able to deal with ambiguity;
  • This position requires willingness to execute projects at remote locations with more than 60% travel required;
  • General understanding of Health, Safety, and Environmental (HSE) requirements and responsibilities.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • GMP experience is preferred;
  • Professional registration and/or certifications as appropriate;
  • Previous experience as a project or process engineer in various capital projects;
  • Secondary language (Spanish, Portuguese, German);
