Laboratory Technician - Davis, CA

This is a full-time, exempt level position.

Position Summary:
We seek a Laboratory Technician I for our Northern California research facility. The successful candidate will be tasked with general lab support including glassware washing; autoclaving; media preparation, solution and buffer prep; replenishing supplies. The individual will work under guidance of other scientists in the lab, independently and in collaboration. Reliability, accuracy and attention to detail in performing assignments, good recording-keeping, and effective time management are essential. May assist in conducting experiments; performing other related duties, tasks and responsibilities as required or assigned. The individual will also be a highly motivated self-starter and able to work in a fast-paced environment on a multi-disciplinary team.

Job Responsibilities:
  • Transports, cleans and sterilizes scientific glassware, plasticware and other lab equipment
  • Responsible for preparation and sterilization of lab solutions buffer and culture media; manages media preparation work flow to meet or exceed customer turn-around-time expectations
  • Autoclaving and proper disposal of laboratory and biohazard waste
  • Replenish laboratories with clean glassware and routine supplies
  • Responsibilities include communicating effectively and assessing lab needs
  • Assists in maintaining good working conditions in the lab; general cleaning, organization, receiving, inventory, and stocking core solutions and media
  • Maintain clean and orderly glassware and media prep rooms, chemical storage areas
  • Assists with inventory and distribution of lab coats, as well as maintaining weekly laundering schedule
  • Responsible for allocating resources and prioritizing daily workload
  • Responsible for troubleshooting issues in real time, including coordinating with additional personnel as needed
  • Responsible for collaborating in the development, implementation, evaluation, and continuous improvement of all pertinent processes and procedures
  • Communicate with Department Manager, Supervisor, and regarding needs and issues
  • Complete a regular inventory of the chemicals and ingredients in the media prep inventory and order as needed to avoid shortages and delays in media production
  • In collaboration with project leaders, proactively monitor laboratory needs to ensure on-time preparation and delivery
  • Know and follow company policies and procedures
  • Notify Department Manager of any circumstances or events that occur during production that could compromise quality
Job Requirements:
  • An Associates degree or Bachelors degree in chemistry, biology or related discipline with 2 years of full-time laboratory experience is required
  • Knowledge of laboratory techniques, procedures, equipment and terminology as well as knowledge of chemical and physical properties of materials and appropriate handling techniques are required
  • Knowledge of sanitation and sterilization methods, techniques and procedures followed in a laboratory; knowledge of the proper methods used in the disposal of contaminated laboratory materials; knowledge of the types and uses of sterilization equipment and devices used in a laboratory.
  • Employee must be able to sit or stand for long periods of time, routinely lift up to 30 lbs., push loaded carts, demonstrate manual dexterity and be able to repetitively grip and manipulate bottles and lids.
  • Ability to understand and carry out verbal and written instructions and to keep accurate records is required
  • Knowledge of the safety practices and procedures followed in a chemical and microbiological laboratory
  • Basic math skills are required; knowledge of the terminology and standard abbreviations used in a microbiological or chemical laboratory
  • Strong affinity for lab work in fast-paced industrial environments; results-oriented mind set; excellent organizational, interpersonal and communication skills; team player and able to work in multidisciplinary teams
  • Computer skills (MS Office - Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access is expected)
