Tenure Status Non-Tenure Track Minimum Qualifications A master's degree from an accredited college or university in an appropriate curriculum Position Summary Reporting to the Director, this Public Service Faculty position directs the day-to-day work of the Horticulture and Grounds departments at the State Botanical Garden of Georgia. This position is based in Athens but has statewide responsibilities related to outreach, training, and education in the area of ornamental horticulture. This position serves as the director, overall manager, and on-site administrator of the operations of all ornamental horticulture and grounds work under the direction of the Director of the State Botanical Garden of Georgia. Work is performed under general direction and is reviewed upon completion. This position supervises and directs a team of Horticulturists and grounds workers at the Botanical Garden. Additionally, the position is responsible for instruction, training, and technical assistance throughout the State of Georgia through the Garden's Education and Outreach program Additional Requirements At least 10 years of considerable experience related to this class of work; or any equivalent combination of training and experience. Relevant/Preferred Education, Experience, Licensure, and/or Certification 5-10 years experience supervising horticulture staff. Certificate in Leadership and Training in Horticulture field Preferred Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and/or Competencies Thorough knowledge of ornamental horticulture in all phases. Thorough knowledge of plant propagation and cultivation. Considerable knowledge of the principles of nursery management. Knowledge of the principles of supervision. Duties/Responsibilities Duties/Responsibilities Supervises grounds/horticulture staff in day-to-day management of grounds, natural areas, theme gardens, collections, trails, greenhouses, and conservatory. Prioritizes work to be done. Confers with horticultural and grounds staff regarding labor requirements. Oversees employment of temporary and part-time workers in horticulture and grounds. Ensures safe conditions of workplace, scheduled and unscheduled maintenance of greenhouses, irrigation, and heating/cooling systems. Leads and administers safety protocols related to pesticide use in grounds and greenhouses, making sure they are stored in and disposed of in a suitable fashion with the utmost attention to safety. Mentors students and/or interns completing training in horticulture/ornamentals Percentage Of Time 30 Duties/Responsibilities Managing and supervising logistical activities involved in the effective delivery of on-going and new programs to include publicity, instructor/participant correspondence, program development, maintaining and seeking new partnerships within UGA or around the state, management information systems for registration, and program evaluation/reporting as it relates to disciplinary field. Works closely with staff and committees to develop project plans covering all stages of development and delivery. Evaluates public impact of programming carried out by the SBG Horticulture department. Serves as subject matter expert on horticulture topics for partners around the state of Georgia as needed regarding seasonal or ornamental plantings, pollinator gardens, and other horticulture-based programs/trainings managed by the State Botanical Garden of Georgia. Provides technical assistance to external agencies/groups. Participates in applied horticultural research Percentage Of Time 30 Duties/Responsibilities Supports the state-wide Connect 2 Protect (C2P) program as a subject-matter expert, by working with statewide constituents to find new areas for C2P Gardens, advising constituents on what works best in local areas, and helping provide educational opportunities for local communities throughout the state of Georgia. Manage installation of C2P gardens by helping communities select sites, source plant materials, and coordinate installation and care plans to be provided to constituents once completed. Percentage Of Time 20 Duties/Responsibilities Serve on various advisory boards and committees related to disciplinary field for SBG and PSO . Serve as spokesperson for programs to external organizations and serves as a spokesperson and content expert for programs to external organizations. Write or serve as a collaborator on grant proposals Percentage Of Time 10 Duties/Responsibilities Reviews and approves purchase orders for grounds section; periodically checks inventory of supplies; manages P-card purchases and submits purchase requests as appropriate.
