Software Engineering Summer Opportunity

Solum lab is a soil testing and research and development lab owned by WinField United. Our partnership with WinField United provides us with the human and capital resources to develop new soil testing and analysis methods that are more efficient, accurate and affordable for farmers. We want to use cutting edge research to better understand the soil ecosystem and improve our ability to characterize the soil. We develop software and soil measurement technology to help growers and their advisers manage farms more efficiently. We are excited to be at the intersection of better measurements, cloud software, mobile and big data analytics for one of the world’s largest and most important industries.

Position Purpose:

Candidate will learn to function in a professional software development environment where they have responsibility for a single project from design through to completion. They will work closely with an experienced engineer to design a lab instrument or tool and use their existing coding skills to bring the tool to life. The intern will be expected to learn and use common software development tools such as source code control and issue management as well as make estimates and track their time spent on tasks. The intern will work with various members of the Solum team to gather requirements, refine goals, plan implementation and troubleshoot.


  • Develop instrument control software (PLC, microcontroller, etc.), user interface, and backend server software as required for specific instrument.
  • Learn how to work in a professional software development environment using tools such as source code control, bug tracking, and estimating and how to use accepted coding and testing practices to produce quality work.
  • Demonstrate the ability to clearly communicate the goals and results of their work to non-technical staff members.


Junior or senior in Software Engineering or Computer Science

Hands-on experience working with hardware devices such as Raspberry Pi, Arduino, or PLC controllers.

Working with robotics devices such as linear positioners, microcontrollers, ladder logic.

Ideally would know Python and JavaScript. Knowledge of Django and/or EmberJS would be a plus.

Knowledge of git, Visual Studio Team Site, IntelliJ products is a plus.


Solid technical competency in general computer programming. Must know at least one language very well.

General knowledge of Linux and Windows command-line.

General understanding of TCP/IP networking (addressing, routing, ports, protocols).
