GENERAL DESCRIPTION / PRIMARY PURPOSE

Fruit Technician must check the quality of fruit; assist with special inspections directed by management. Pulp and Peel fruit at loading if necessary, provide assistance with trials as required, and/or additional duties as assigned by the manager.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND TASKS/DUTIES OF THE POSITION

  • Keep an organized log of inspections for both conventional and organic products with their corresponding hygiene procedures.
  • Document with photos any fruit defects affecting the quality of the fruit.
  • Ensure proper inspection productivity.
  • Ability to multi-task, prioritize and complete tasks.
  • Ensure proper cleaning procedures and maintain cleaning log, per Food Safety procedures.
  • Provide other duties and tasks as assigned.

INTERNAL & EXTERNAL RELATIONS

Internal: DFF LA: General Managers, Quality Managers, Production Managers, Quality & Production Supervisors, whenever they visit port.

External: Warehouse personnel at Port of Wilmington, union labor, truck drivers and Union personnel (when working at the gate).

EDUCATION AND CERTIFICATION

  • High school diploma or equivalent preferred
  • Prefer 2+ year’s work related or qualify experience
  • Bilingual skills (English/Spanish) preferred
  • Must have a valid state issued driver’s license
  • Must be eligible for a Transportation Identification Worker Credential (TWIC) to access the port

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to walk; sit; stand; use hands to handle or feel objects, tools, or controls; reach with hands and arms; balance; stoop; talk or hear. The employee must be able to:

  • Lift and move 50 lb. boxes of bananas, plantains and pineapples.
  • Ability to work in and outdoors, all seasons.
  • Work in a warehouse setting or field location.
  • Work around heavy equipment and in high places
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is exposed to wet and/or humid conditions; cold and hot.

EQUIPMENT NEEDED

  • Fork Lift Truck (To move pallets for inspection)

WORK HOUR REQUIREMENT

  • Regular hours. Ability to work overtime, weekends if needed.
