Utah’s Hogle Zoo Utah s Hogle Zoo is our community s gateway to animals, connecting our visitors with the natural world and engaging them in wildlife conservation action, locally and worldwide. Conservation Internship: SpringDescription of Internship: The area of conservation is a multidisciplinary field and this internship, based at Utah s Hogle Zoo, aims to reflect that. The Conservation Intern will work with both our Wildlife Biologist and our Conservation Action Coordinator, with opportunities to shadow in both the animal care and education departments. Focus areas will include; increasing guest awareness to the conservation work conducted by Hogle Zoo, field-work, and Zoo-wide waste management and energy efficiency. Supervision: The spring intern will be supervised Kayleigh Mullen, Citizen Science Wildlife Biologist and Tori Bird, Conservation Action coordinator, in the Conservation Department of Utah s Hogle Zoo. Proposed Schedule: * February 10th May 1st * 12-week period * Flexible up to 16 hours a week * Days worked can be discussed at interview to fit with your schedule Compensation: This is an unpaid internship. During your internship you will receive a 50% discount of food and beverages at the Zoo and a 30% discount in our gift shop. This internship will add diverse skills to your resume. Applicant Requirements: * Applicant must be 18 years old or older. * Intern must have completed at least one full year of college credits. * Candidates must provide proof of current negative TB test and tetanus shot. * Applicants must pass a drug test and background check. * Applicant must be able to stand for at least 3 hours. * Applicant must be able to lift 30 lbs. * Waste audits are a part of this internship, so the applicant must be fine handling waste (food, plastics, paper, wrappers etc.) and getting dirty in general. Internship Requirements: * Intern completes 100 200 hours over a 12-week period * Intern Project: To be determined, but will be in line with your own interests and support your learning goals * Journal: each intern must keep a weekly journal to be shared with their supervisor and mentor. * Presentation: Interns will prepare a 10- 15 minute presentation covering interns chosen final project College Credits: Utah s Hogle Zoo is willing to work with higher learning institutions with regards to completing scholastic requirements during the student s internship. Tasks May Include: * Investigating ways in which the Zoo can expand their citizen science program. * Helping prepare for Zoo programs and events such as Party for the Planet, Gorillas on the Line and FrogWatch. * Taking part in public awareness events in matters regarding conservation and sustainability, e.g.: helping conduct FrogWatch training for the 2020 season, develop materials for Earth Day, and help staff a table on Citizen Science Day. * Assisting in field days that may include monitoring animals such as raptors, amphibians and sage grouse * Helping identify areas of Zoo operations that can be improved so as to more closely align with AZA sustainability guidelines. * Helping create a culture shift within the Zoo to move away from single use disposables. * Helping increase guest and staff awareness of recycling efforts we have going on currently at the Zoo. * Helping increase guest awareness of local conservation work the Zoo is undertaking. * Help manage conservation engagement through social media (e.g. FrogWatch Facebook page). * Assisting with the development and implementation of ecological monitoring along the Jordan River, both visual encounter surveys and the development of a camera trapping project. * Conducting waste audits of events held at the Zoo, food areas and animal care areas in preparation for becoming a participating member of the anaerobic digester facility. * Conducting utility data analysis; using excel, develop an overview of utility usage here at the Zoo and rates changes and opportunities for reduction. * Engaging with the Zoo s Green Team via meetings and organizing a group outing. * Utilizing GIS to map Zoo grounds. * Participating in off-site volunteering opportunities or tours. Internship Learning Objectives: * Intern will learn how modern zoos support and encourage conservation. They will learn about habitat loss, and other threats to wildlife, and the many in-situ conservation projects supported by Utah s Hogle Zoo. * Intern will learn how sustainability action is the base for long-term success for wildlife conservation. This includes continuation of education for staff with our Green Team, recycle and waste management education and monitoring, and sustainability technologies that can be implemented to improve our positive environmental impact. * Intern will learn about the development and implementation of citizen science projects, from recruitment through training, and implementation To Apply: Applications are due by January 14th.
