West Virginia Department of Agriculture Position Description Job Title: Meat and Poultry Inspector II Division: Animal Health Headquarters: Morgantown / Clarksburg, WV Reports To: Supervisor Supervisory Responsibility: None FLSA Status: Non-Exempt Nature of Work: Under general supervision of a Circuit Supervisor and/or Meat and Poultry Inspection Manager, the Meat and Poultry Inspector II performs meat and poultry inspections and plant and equipment sanitation inspections at the full performance level at commercial slaughterhouses, and meat and poultry processing plants. The Meat and Poultry Inspector II must continually review applicable meat and poultry inspection laws, regulations, manuals, and inspection methods. Examples of Work:
Working Conditions: Extensive travel to inspected plants (5 days per week regularly; weekends/holidays infrequently) to perform duties under difficult environment conditions (heat, high humidity, sharp objects, slippery floors, etc.). Requires the ability to sit, stand, or walk for extended periods of time; frequently bend, squat, reach above shoulder level, push, pull, and handle objects, and capable of lifting up to 50 pounds. Requires well-developed manual dexterity, contact with animal blood and body fluids, and occasional indirect contact with ingesta and chemical substances. Requires excellent vision and color recognition. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Minimum Qualifications: Education: High School diploma or GED and VoTech Certification of additional training in slaughter of animals and/or meat processing preferred. Experience: Five years' experience as a Meat Inspector I and successful completion of all associated training. Substitutions: Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with a degree in an agriculture-related field and extensive experience in a food safety field may be substituted for experience. Licenses/ Certifications: Food Safety and Inspection Service (USDA, FSIS) training equivalent for plant inspection certification. Additional Requirements:
