Welcome to Gernaat Dairy! We are hiring a Herdsman who is responsible for the health and wellbeing of all cows. In this role you will analyze reports for health examination of fresh animals, check and treat fresh animals, and analyze health reports for all lactating cows. We are a family-owned, 3,000-head dairy located in Falmouth, MI (20 miles east of Cadillac, MI). We pride ourselves on operating a progressive dairy farm offering high quality milk to our customers. Our team prides itself on working together to be a solid, efficient, positive, and well-organized team. We offer competitive pay based on experience with a Monday – Friday work week with additional days as necessary. What you will be doing: Fresh cow care • Monitor all fresh animals. Collect milk samples from fresh cows. • Treatment and care for animals in need. • Assist with sorting and moving cows. Animal health • Evaluate animal health and performance from reports generated from the computer. • Conduct health examinations (check temperature, check for ketosis, listen to lungs, check for DA’s etc.). • Administer oral and IV treatments. Breeding shots. • Identify any abnormal cows in the herd. • Assist with herd health. Dry treating and vaccinating cows. • Proper treatment and care for all recumbent animals that cannot stand. • Remove foot wraps as needed. Put on and remove HT-tags as needed. • Clean sort lanes, sand pens, and management areas when needed. • Manage curtains for optimal barn air quality. What we’re looking for: • Experience working in agriculture at a dairy farm with livestock as a Herdsmen or relatable experience. • Someone who is detail oriented, has an interest in continuing to learn, has strong time management skills and a team player. • Must be capable of setting priorities and working under pressure. • Must be able to multi-task and work productively. • Must be able to work independently and work well as a team. • Must have an open mind with a positive attitude. • Must handle cattle in a quiet, calm, non-abusive manner. | |
