A phone interview can be a make it or break it point during a job search. When a company schedules a phone interview with you, it is often to get a better feel for you so that they can decide if they want to bring you in for an in person interview. While an interview over the phone is often much more casual than a face-to-face interview, there are still some important things to keep in mind.

Make sure you are in a quiet place where there will not be any distractions. An employer does not want to hear the TV, people talking, or other noises in the background while they are trying to listen to what you have to say.

Research the company and the position you have applied for before the call. Have your resume and the job description printed out and in front of you so that you are prepared for any questions about either of those things.

When you are answering questions, explain yourself! Only answering questions with “yes” or “no” is a quick way for the conversation to come to an end. You want to keep the conversation moving and interesting for the interviewer. Make sure you keep your language positive and that you do not trash anyone, even past employers, or you will appear to have a negative attitude.

And lastly, SMILE! Even though they can’t see it, the interviewer will be able to hear it in the tone of your voice!
